Upgrade rule
If an upgrade makes every cycle better, it is probably early priority. If it only helps one route or one rare event, wait until the base loop is strong.
- First improve how much you carry.
- Then reduce the time between fills and rewards.
- Then buy unlocks that open new checkpoint or ending routes.
When to change priority
If a checkpoint requires a specific upgrade, that upgrade can jump ahead. If hard difficulty rewards are better, survival or routing upgrades may become more important.
Quick reference
| Priority | Upgrade focus | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Capacity and loop value | Raises every reward cycle |
| 2 | Speed and route convenience | Cuts repeated downtime |
| 3 | Gate unlocks | Opens checkpoints, endings, or deeper zones |
Best Upgrades in Drain the Lake FAQ
What should I upgrade first?

Are best upgrades different in hard difficulty?
They can be. Hard difficulty may make route control or survival more valuable than pure speed.
